Industry Group BSA Rolls Out AI Recs

BSA | The Software Alliance introduces a list of policy recommendations to help governments around the world pursue regulations on AI.

“Sometimes you see the story written that industry is against legislation because they think it's going to stifle innovation, but it's also true that legislation can actually promote innovation and promote the adoption of technology,” said Craig Albright, BSA’s senior vice president of U.S. government relations.

He said the group attempted to approach its AI solutions “holistically.” The list of policy recommendations, shared exclusively with MT, calls for increasing R&D funding (including through the National AI Research Resource), enacting a national data privacy law, promoting open source development and more. Let’s dig in.

— Calling out the government: Albright said BSA wants to see agencies implement the AI Risk Management Framework developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He said President Joe Biden’s AI executive order and subsequent implementation guidance did not give the framework a clear enough role.

“The way they've set it up, they're encouraging [agencies] to consider the RMF, other frameworks that are out there, even encouraging different agencies to come up with different things that are unique to their agencies — obviously, flexibility to some degree is needed — but we’re concerned that they're encouraging a degree of diversity and complication across agencies that is going to undermine the government's ability to be able to both manage risk and take advantage of the technology,” Albright said.
