BSA Statement on Comments Filed to California Attorney General
WASHINGTON – December 6, 2019 – BSA | The Software Alliance today filed comments to the California Attorney General on draft regulations to implement the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). In the comments, BSA urged California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra to ensure the regulations clearly reflect the distinct role of service providers. Service providers create the trusted technology products and services that power other businesses – and have important obligations to safeguard the privacy of data they process and maintain. BSA supports strong privacy rules that ensure companies will handle data responsibly.
“Consumers must be able to trust companies to act responsibly with their data. We appreciate California’s leadership on data privacy and are glad the CCPA recognizes the important and unique role that service providers play in helping businesses serve their customers,” said Kate Goodloe, Director, Policy at BSA | The Software Alliance. “BSA and our member companies recognize the need for service providers to safeguard the privacy and security of the data they hold. To ensure that these regulations are not inadvertently read to alter the important relationship between service providers and the businesses they serve, we encourage the California Attorney General to be even clearer in addressing how service providers are treated under the CCPA.”
BSA continues to advocate for strong, comprehensive federal legislation that is worthy of becoming the national standard. For more information about BSA’s privacy work, visit: https://www.bsa.org/policy-issues/data-privacy
