BSA Welcomes Commission Free Flow of Data Proposal

BRUSSELS, 13 September 2017 – BSA | The Software Alliance welcomes today’s publication by the European Commission of a legislative proposal on a framework for the free flow of data in the EU. The draft Regulation, which seeks to ensure the free movement of non-personal data within the EU, will complement the General Data Protection Regulation and create a comprehensive European framework for the free movement of data in the Single Market.

“The Commission’s proposal is a big step in the right direction and was long overdue. A free movement of data principle is one of the missing pieces for the establishment of a true Digital Single Market and is a clear sign that the Commission is serious about fostering the EU data economy. While the Commission’s proposal needs certain clarifications regarding its scope and the nature of the limitations it seeks to impose on Member States, we are pleased that the process is moving forward,” said Thomas Boué, Director General, Policy – EMEA.
