BSA Warns of Unforeseen e-Privacy Consequences on Cybersecurity and Cloud Computing

Brussels – 19 October 2017 –

BSA | The Software Alliance expresses its disappointment with the results of today’s LIBE Committee vote on the draft e-Privacy Regulation. The text adopted by LIBE Committee MEPs creates a confusing legal framework for software companies seeking to develop, experiment and enhance both new and existing digital products and services.

Commenting on the vote, Thomas Boué said: “While we recognize the hard work of the LIBE Committee over the past months, we feel that the report fails to reach the proper balance between the protection of fundamental rights and allowing for continued digital innovation. A regime built solely around consent, covering both data “in transit” and “at rest”, will not only muddy the waters with the GDPR, but will also have unintended consequences on cybersecurity solutions and the further adoption of cloud computing. We therefore hope that the Parliament will reconsider its position prior to voting in Plenary and give enough breathing room for future technologies to thrive.”
